Police Presence and Arrests
The police were present at the harbour, with a buffer zone established between the protesters and the shipping channel. According to reports, multiple people were arrested on Saturday afternoon, most of whom were released without charge. Three individuals, two men aged 27 and 60, and a 26-year-old woman, were taken to Newcastle Police Station where they are assisting police with their inquiries.
Local Support for Protest
Local doctor Peter Schofield was escorted by police back to land after entering the shipping channel but was allowed to walk free. He expressed his concerns about climate change and its health consequences, stating that “we know what needs to be done … the government’s not doing it, so we need to give them a prod.”
Midnight Oil Frontman Supports Protest
Midnight Oil frontman Peter Garrett delivered messages of support to the protesters and performed a few songs at the event. He emphasized the importance of addressing climate change, saying “consider what the scientists are telling us, look at the agreements we’re trying to forge internationally and understand that this is one of the most defining issues of our time.”
Global Significance
The protest in Newcastle Harbour was part of a global movement against climate change. The COP29 summit, which was taking place at the same time, saw poorer nations temporarily walk out due to disagreements over carbon trading. However, a deal was struck on the issue.
