Snowfall Forecast: Latest Timeline and Expected Totals for Boston Area

As we approach the weekend, a significant winter storm is expected to bring snow to the Boston area, followed by a deep freeze. Thursday will be a dry and partly sunny day, but Friday will mark the beginning of the snowfall.

Latest Snowfall Timeline

According to Boston 25 Morning News meteorologist Shiri Spear, a few sprinkles and flurries are possible on Friday, although the impacts will be low with no more than a patchy coating. However, as evening approaches, a “distant ocean storm” will swing in additional moisture, bringing steadier rain and snow to southeastern and eastern Massachusetts.

As temperatures drop overnight into early Saturday, it will become increasingly likely that local roads turn slippery and snowy. Snow showers may linger into Saturday morning.

Expected Snow Totals

Spear predicts that most towns east of Interstate 495 can expect 1-2 inches of snow, with some areas potentially reaching up to 3 inches. However, Cape Cod and the Islands might not be cool enough for significant accumulation, with a slushy coating of up to 1 inch likely in those communities.

Arctic Air Arrives

The cold snap will continue into Sunday, with highs only reaching the mid-20s. A high near 30 degrees is expected on Saturday, but temperatures will plummet as the arctic air settles over the region.
