National Chain to Close All Kansas City Area Stores Next Year
Party City, a national chain of party supplies stores, has announced that it will be closing all its locations in the Kansas City area by next year. This decision comes after years of struggling with increased competition from online retailers and larger brick-and-mortar stores.
History of Decline
Party City’s decline began when it declared bankruptcy in January 2023 due to a large debt load of around $800 million. Despite exiting bankruptcy that September, the company continued to struggle with declining sales. The rise of online retailers like Amazon, as well as larger brick-and-mortar stores like Walmart, and seasonal pop-up stores like Spirit Halloween, further contributed to Party City’s decline.
Kansas City Area Stores Affected
The four Party City stores in the Kansas City area that will be closing include:
-
Independence (19850 E. Jackson Drive)
-
Liberty (8373 N. Booth Ave.)
-
Lee’s Summit (940 NE Sam Walton Lane)
-
Overland Park (8400 W. 135th St.)
Employees at these locations have been informed that they will be closing sometime in February and will not be accepting balloon orders after January 1.
Expected Timeline
Hours of operation are expected to remain the same until the stores close. The exact date for closure has not been announced, but it is anticipated to occur by next year.
