Snowy Secrets Revealed in Northeast Doppler Radar Image
The recent weather headlines have been dominated by massive lake-effect snowstorms that buried the Great Lakes area under feet of snow. However, just a day ago, the first measurable snow of the year fell across much of the I-95 corridor.
But while it seemed like the region was heading towards calmer weather on Saturday morning, Mother Nature had a few hidden tricks up her sleeve. A closer look at the Doppler Radar image revealed some fascinating phenomena unfolding in the Northeast.
Lake-Effect Snow Takes Center Stage
At first glance, the radar image appears to be a typical winter wonderland scene. However, upon closer inspection, a thin but intense band of snow can be seen falling just east of Cleveland. This is classic lake-effect snow, where moisture from Lake Erie and Lake Huron combines with cold air to produce heavy snowfall.
The Mohawk-Hudson Convergence
But it’s not all about the lakes. In Albany, New York, a different process was at play – the Mohawk-Hudson Convergence. This occurs when winds are channeled east along the Mohawk Valley and south through the Hudson Valley, combining near Albany to create lift that leads to snow development.
Snowfall Rates Reach Up to 3 Inches Per Hour
As the arctic air mass sweeps over the Great Lakes, it picks up warmth and moisture from the lakes’ surface. This rising air condenses into clouds, which can grow into narrow bands capable of producing snowfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour or more.
Snow Falls Across Multiple Regions
The lake-effect snow didn’t stop at just one location. It also brought lingering snow to Ithaca and Binghamton in central New York, spreading into northeastern Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, arctic winds coming off Lake Champlain brought snow to the Burlington area of Vermont.
Cold Temperatures Take Over
As the drier arctic air mass takes over the region, temperatures are expected to drop significantly, bringing the coldest conditions so far this season.
