A Scorching Hot Christmas for Many Cities

Today is shaping up to be a hot Christmas for much of the country. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Christmas and Boxing Day across the capital cities are forecast to range from warm sunshine to scorching heat and storms.

Sydney, New South Wales

Christmas Day in Sydney is forecast to reach a maximum of 27 degrees, with cloud clearing. Warm and dry conditions are expected for most of NSW, with a slight chance of a few coastal showers during the morning. Boxing Day should hit a slightly higher top of 29 degrees but will be mostly cloudy and humid, with showers in the morning.

Melbourne, Victoria

Victoria can expect a warm, dry and settled day, with temperatures near or above average. Melbourne is expected to reach a maximum of 31 degrees. Forecasters are now expecting a heat surge on Boxing Day, with a top of 39 degrees in the city as cricket fans swelter during the MCG Test match.

Brisbane, Queensland

It’s forecast to be a warm one in Brisbane today. Temperatures are expected to hit 30 degrees and it’ll be humid with periods of clouds and sunshine. Temperatures will drop to 20 degrees by nighttime with clear skies. Boxing Day will reach 30 degrees but it is expected to feel more like 34 degrees.

Canberra, ACT

Christmas Day in Australia’s capital will be a warm day at 31 degrees. It’s forecast to be sunny and dry throughout the day. December 26 is looking warmer, with a top of 35 degrees.

Perth, Western Australia

It’s looking like a mostly pleasant but windy day in Perth this Christmas, with 25 degrees forecast. The bureau warned the west and south coasts should expect mild conditions, with light showers developing around the south-west during the afternoon and evening. Temperatures will be hot to very hot for the north-west, north and interior of the state. There is the possibility of an afternoon thunderstorm in the north.

Adelaide, South Australia

Adelaide is predicted to be hot and sunny. The SA capital is forecast to have its hottest Christmas Day in eight years, with temperatures of 37 degrees forecast. Parts of the state’s south, meanwhile, are expected to nudge 40. Boxing Day in Adelaide is forecast to be cooler at 31, with a shower or two and wind.

Darwin, Northern Territory

Christmas Day is humid and wet for Darwin. Tops of 34 degrees are expected, but it will feel closer to 41. A chance of showers and storms is forecast for the capital, however conditions are likely to be dry and sunny in the south. Boxing Day will be just as hot and humid, with thick cloud cover, a couple of showers and a thunderstorm in the morning.

Hobart, Tasmania

It’ll likely be a lot cooler in Hobart with a top of 23 degrees forecast in Tasmania‘s capital on Christmas Day. Tasmania can expect some morning showers around the west and south coast, however fine and mostly sunny conditions are forecast elsewhere. Boxing Day is expected to be hotter, topping out at 30 degrees.
