Celebrating First Night of Hanukkah in Wilkes-Barre
The first night of Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday commemorating a historic victory of light over darkness, was marked by a unique event in Luzerne County. On Wednesday, members of Temple Israel Wilkes-Barre participated in the 48th Annual Christmas Together celebration.
Interfaith Celebrations Bring Joy and Happiness
During the event, Temple Israel’s musicians played traditional Jewish songs for guests to enjoy. According to Rabbi Larry Kaplan, this annual tradition is a highlight of their calendar. “It’s a lot of fun and it brings light and happiness and joy,” he explained.
The overlap between Christmas and Hanukkah only occurs every 114 years, making this occasion even more special. Despite the festive atmosphere, Jewish leaders emphasized that they attend Christmas Together every year as a symbol of unity and friendship with their Christian neighbors.
