UK Air Travel Disrupted by Widespread Fog
A thick layer of fog has disrupted air travel across the UK, with dozens of flights cancelled or delayed at some of the country’s busiest airports. The fog is expected to clear over the weekend, but not before causing widespread disruption to passengers.
Impact on Airports and Flights
The UK’s main air traffic control provider, Nats, said that temporary air traffic restrictions are in place at several airports across the UK due to widespread fog. Dozens of flights from Heathrow were also delayed or cancelled, with many more flights affected at Manchester Airport, Glasgow Airport, and Cardiff Airport.
Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline and airport. Irem, a passenger who had her flight from Germany to the UK delayed by nearly seven hours due to fog at Manchester Airport, described the experience as “a bit of a nightmare”. She was eventually able to board a plane to continue her journey, but not before spending several hours waiting for the bus.
Weather Forecast
The persistent low cloud, mist and fog has been trapped in place by a slow-moving area of high pressure. However, the weather is expected to clear over the weekend, with Saturday starting with widespread low cloud, mist and fog, particularly in England and Wales. Some areas are expected to see sunshine, but heavy rain is forecast for Scotland.
By Sunday, conditions are expected to improve significantly, with sunny spells across much of England, Wales and Northern Ireland. However, motorists are still advised to exercise caution when driving due to the foggy weather.
Advice for Passengers
Passengers are advised to check the latest flight information before traveling and to plan ahead in case their journey is disrupted. National Highways has also issued advice on how to stay safe while driving in foggy conditions, including using dipped headlights, wipers and demisters.
