A New Community Hub Takes Shape on Milwaukee’s West Side
The shuttered Walmart Neighborhood Market at 7025 W. Main St. is being transformed into a vibrant Latin American grocery store, Monterrey Market. The conversion is the result of an application filed with the city Department of Neighborhood Services.
Honoring Traditions and Strengthening Connections
Monterrey Market, owned by Milwaukee businessman Robert Montemayor, sells a diverse range of American and Latin American products at two locations in the city. The store prides itself on being more than just a grocery store, but a place where traditions are honored, and connections are strengthened.
In an interview with the Journal Sentinel in 2019, Montemayor described his original store on South 13th Street as a neighborhood fixture. This new location at W. Main St. will bring a similar sense of community to the area.
A Changing Landscape for Local Business
The decision to close the Walmart Neighborhood Market was influenced by various factors, including projected financial performance, location, population, customer needs, and the proximity of other nearby stores. However, Montemayor’s vision for Monterrey Market is one of renewal and revitalization.
As the store takes shape, it will offer a unique shopping experience that showcases the rich cultural heritage of Latin America. With its commitment to quality products and community engagement, Monterrey Market is poised to become an integral part of Milwaukee’s west side neighborhood.
