Greg Gumbel was an American sportscaster and television host. He is best known for his work as a play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports’ coverage of the National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB).
Gumbel began his career in sports broadcasting in 1976, working as a play-by-play announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals. He later moved to WMAQ-TV in Chicago, where he worked as a sportscaster and won two local Emmy Awards.
In 1984, Gumbel joined CBS Sports, where he became the host of “The NFL Today,” the network’s NFL pre-game, halftime, and post-game studio show. He also called several Super Bowls, including Super Bowl XXVI in 1992 and Super Bowl XLVII in 2013.
Gumbel was known for his smooth and authoritative delivery, as well as his ability to bring a sense of excitement and energy to the broadcast. He worked alongside many prominent analysts and commentators throughout his career, including Phil Simms, Boomer Esiason, and Dan Dierdorf.
