Scotland is bracing for a stormy Hogmanay on December 31st as a yellow weather warning has been issued for heavy rain and disruption across the country.
Weather Alert: Yellow Warning Issued for Heavy Rain and Disruption in Scotland
A yellow weather warning has been issued for nearly all of Scotland on Hogmanay, covering areas north of the border apart from Orkney and Shetland. The warning will take effect on both 30 December and Hogmanay, with some areas potentially seeing significant rain totals.
Heavy Rain and Disruption Expected
Forecasters have warned that heavy rain could bring “significant disruption” in the build-up to Hogmanay, especially in northern Scotland and over high ground. Snow is also possible, causing further disruptions. The Met Office has stated that rain is likely to become persistent and occasionally heavy on Monday, with a possibility of lasting through New Year’s Eve.
Uncertainty Over Affected Areas
However, there is still uncertainty over which areas will be affected the most by the heavy rain. The forecaster added that flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and travel disruption, while there is also a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life. Power cuts are also possible, as well as homes and businesses being flooded.
Edinburgh‘s Hogmanay Preparations
Crowds are expected to gather in Edinburgh for New Year’s Eve celebrations on 31 December. Event organisers have advised people to dress for all weathers and check social media for updates. A spokesperson for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay said that the organisation is working closely with the Met Office to monitor forecasts and advise customers to stay up-to-date via their social channels.
What to Expect
Weekend temperatures at the weekend will remain mild, with little frost expected. However, it is not ideal weather considering Scotland’s reputation for hosting vibrant New Year’s Eve celebrations. As meteorologist Simon Partridge noted, “wet and rather windy” weather could be a challenge in Scotland on Hogmanay.
Stay Informed
The Met Office has issued the yellow warning, which will be in force for the whole of Monday and Tuesday. It is essential to stay informed about the latest forecast updates and any changes to the weather warning.
