In the heart of Nairobi, Kenya’s first ice hockey team, the Ice Lions, is defying odds to bring this thrilling sport to the equator. With perseverance and passion, they’re growing the sport from scratch.
Kenya’s Foray into Ice Hockey: A Journey of Perseverance and Passion
In the heart of Nairobi, where the average temperature is over 20°C, lies a unique gem – the Panari Hotel ice rink. This sole ice rink in east and central Africa serves as the training base for the Kenya Ice Lions, the country’s first and only ice hockey team.
The Birth of a Team
Formed in 2016 by a group of expats from the United States and Canada, the Ice Lions have faced numerous challenges since their inception. With roller hockey being more accessible and popular in Kenya, many newer members were scouted wearing skates with wheels on them rather than blades. Despite these obstacles, the team has persevered, driven by love for the sport and dedication.
Overcoming Challenges
Playing ice hockey on the equator is not easy. Access to ice time is expensive, with a single hour costing nearly $100. The team’s home rink is also significantly smaller than an Olympic-sized rink, restricting them to four-on-four matches. Additionally, getting enough protective equipment proves difficult, as specialized gear is only available in Europe and North America.
Growing the Sport
The Ice Lions are keen to grow the sport in Kenya and develop the next generation of players. Every Saturday morning, they conduct coaching sessions for children, with 12-year-old Liam Pashari among those who attend. The team also plans to establish a female team, but currently has only four women playing alongside the men.
International Exposure
The Ice Lions have gained international exposure through partnerships with local media and companies. A trip to Canada, where players met with National Hockey League (NHL) stars Sidney Crosby and Nathan Mackinnon, was transformational. The team received donations for equipment, funds for ice time, and more sponsors, helping them grow.
Reaching New Heights
Recently, the Ice Lions won an exhibition tournament on a full-size rink in South Africa, proving that they can compete at this level. Captain Benjamin Mburu stated, “This proved to us, and everyone, that we can do this.” With associate membership of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the team is more motivated than ever to win more tournaments and reach their ultimate goal – the Winter Olympics.
The Kenya Ice Lions’ journey is a testament to perseverance and passion. Despite facing numerous challenges, they have managed to grow the sport in Kenya and develop the next generation of players. With international exposure and a growing fan base, the team is poised to take ice hockey to new heights.
