A rare, spherical egg discovered in Devon is set to be auctioned off in March, with the proceeds going towards a local charity. The unusual find has sparked interest in the world of unusual eggs, with some speculating that it could fetch a significant amount at auction.
Rare Spherical Egg Discovered in Devon
A farm worker in Devon has stumbled upon what she believes is a “one-in-a-billion” spherical egg. Alison Greene, who has handled over 42 million eggs on Fenton Farm near the Somerset border during her three-year tenure as an egg handler, claims to have never seen a perfectly round egg before.
The Discovery
Greene discovered the unusual egg in December and was immediately struck by its unique shape. According to her, spherical eggs roll differently than typical eggs, and this one stood out from the rest. “It was really surprising because they roll in a specific way and this one just didn’t – it just stood out,” she said.
The 57-year-old plans to send the egg to auction in Exeter in March, with the proceeds going to the Devon Rape Crisis charity. Greene hopes that the egg will fetch a significant amount of money, saying “Hopefully, it will sell for a lot of money.”
Auction Expectations
Brian Goodison-Blanks, an auctioneer at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood Auctioneers in Exeter, believes that the spherical chicken egg is quite unusual. He notes that people have paid north of £100 and sometimes up to £200 for such eggs in the past.
In fact, a similar discovery was sold at auction for £200 in Berkshire last month, with the funds going towards a mental health charity. The egg was originally discovered in a box bought by a woman from her local supermarket in Ayr and was donated to the Iuventas Foundation, which provides mentoring and life coaching support to young people.
Previous Sales
In 2015, a spherical chicken’s egg sold for £480 on eBay after being laid by a bird belonging to Kim Broughton. The hen was subsequently renamed Ping Pong, and the egg was auctioned in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
The sale of this rare egg has sparked interest in the world of unusual eggs, with some speculating that it could fetch a significant amount at auction. Only time will tell what the final price will be for this “one-in-a-billion” discovery.
