Get ready for winter weather updates as a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for southern counties, with snowfall expected on Tuesday. The latest forecast suggests a drier and colder air mass will dominate the region, potentially suppressing moisture and leading to minimal snow accumulation in some areas.
Snow for Some Tuesday; Sunday Evening Update
Our latest forecast for snow potential on Tuesday continues to trend drier and further south. This is a possibility we mentioned all week, with cold and dry air potentially suppressing any moisture in the region.
A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for our southern-most counties: Greene, Hale, Bibb, Chilton, and Coosa counties until Wednesday morning at 6 AM. This will likely be upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning sometime this evening or early Monday. A Winter Weather Advisory may also be issued for counties just north of the current watch area.
Tuesday’s Snowfall Expectations
The Tuesday morning commute will be cloudy and dry, with no snow expected until the afternoon hours. Light snow should begin falling near Demopolis and Moundville areas around lunchtime on Tuesday, quickly spreading northeast to cover the southern half of the area by mid-afternoon. Even in areas where the snow is more persistent, it’s a quick-hitting event, lasting only 2-4 hours.
Travel Impacts and Snowfall Amounts
The areas most likely to experience travel impacts are those in dark blue (Green, Hale, Bibb, Chilton, southern Shelby, southern Talladega, Coosa, and Clay counties). For the counties in lighter blue (Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, St. Clair, and Etowah), impacts should be minimal and spotty.
Our first look at potential snowfall amounts suggests that flurries are possible north of the I-20 corridor, with a dusting possible in spots south of there. Confidence is higher for areas further south, where up to an inch of snow is possible. Amounts increase and impacts worsen as you travel toward the southern half of the state.
Important Notes
It only takes a trace of snow to cause problems, so be sure to take necessary precautions. This event won’t be nearly as impressive as the previous storm, but the impacts will still be far-reaching in areas that receive any accumulation at all.
We’ll provide another update on the CBS-42 News at 10 tonight and Meteorologist Alex Puckett will have another update early Monday morning. Stay tuned for any changes!
