Two Van Gogh Paintings to be Shown in London for First Time

A New Perspective on the Artist’s Work

Two paintings by Vincent van Gogh, created during a tumultuous period in his life, will make their debut in London for the first time. The Courtyard of the Hospital at Arles and The Ward in the Hospital at Arles were produced in April 1889, while the artist was recovering from an ear mutilation incident.

The paintings are part of the Oskar Reinhart Collection, which has been prohibited from lending its artworks until recently. The collection’s museum, Am Römerholz, is currently undergoing building work, so the paintings will be loaned to the Courtauld Gallery for a special exhibition. This marks the first time these specific works have been shown in London.

Context and Significance

Van Gogh spent time at an asylum in Arles, southern France, after suffering from mental health issues. During his stay, he created numerous artworks, including the two paintings now on loan to the Courtauld Gallery. The exhibition featuring these works will also include a selection of major paintings by artists who preceded the impressionists.

Exhibition Details

The exhibition, titled “Goya to Impressionism: Masterpieces from the Oskar Reinhart Collection,” will run from February 14th to May 26th at the Courtauld Gallery. The gallery has recently undergone a major renovation and narrowly escaped a fire in 2024, which highlights its importance as a cultural institution.

Van Gogh’s self-portrait, featuring a bandaged ear, is also part of the gallery’s collection and will be on display alongside these new additions.
