Airbnb’s CEO, Brian Chesky, is taking a cautious approach to Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) technology, seeing it as a tool rather than a replacement for human innovation.
Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky Is in No Rush to Fully Embrace A.I.
Brian Chesky, Airbnb’s chief executive, has expressed hesitation towards fully embracing Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) technology across the company’s core business of travel planning. ‘I don’t think it’s quite ready for prime time,’ Chesky stated during the company’s quarterly earnings call.
The Future of Travel Planning: A.I.’s Potential
Despite his reservations, Chesky acknowledges that A.I. has the potential to profoundly transform the travel industry. He believes that the technology will eventually revolutionize the way people plan and experience travel. However, for now, Airbnb is taking a cautious approach by experimenting with A.I. in customer service.
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to the development of computer systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as learning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
AI involves the use of algorithms and data to enable machines to think and act like humans.
According to a report by Gartner, the global AI market is projected to reach $190 billion by 2025, with applications in healthcare, finance, and customer service.
AI has various types, including narrow or weak AI, general AI, and superintelligence.
Baby Steps towards A.I.: Customer Service and Beyond

Airbnb is currently exploring the use of A.I.-powered customer support to offer multi-lingual assistance and automate contract review. This technology will eventually expand into search functionality, making it possible for users to receive personalized travel recommendations from a virtual concierge.
A.I. is also being utilized by Airbnb engineers, resulting in small productivity gains. While significant payoffs have yet to be realized, Chesky estimates that A.I. could lead to a 30 percent increase in productivity within the next few years.
Hesitation towards A.I. Hasn’t Hurt Business
Airbnb’s cautious approach towards A.I. has not hindered its business growth. The company reported a 12 percent year-over-year revenue increase, with profits surging 24 percent to $461 million during the October-December quarter. This success has sent Airbnb stock soaring nearly 15 percent.
The ‘Amazon’ of Travel: Expanding Beyond Core Business
Airbnb’s grand vision is to become an all-encompassing travel platform, similar to Amazon. The company plans to invest up to $250 million in new business opportunities that will be unveiled in May. Chesky aims to create a seamless user experience by expanding beyond Airbnb’s core focus on accommodations.
‘We’re going to probably follow the path of Amazon,’ said Chesky, referring to the e-commerce giant’s expansion from online bookselling into various retail and digital entertainment sectors. ‘We’re now ready for this next chapter to expand beyond our core, where Airbnb is just a place to stay.‘
