A major upgrade for Port Macquarie Hospital’s infrastructure has been approved by NSW authorities, with a focus on expanding emergency and maternity departments to cater to the growing needs of the local community.
The New South Wales (NSW) Government has announced the selection of a project team to lead the A$265m upgrade of Port Macquarie Base Hospital. The chosen team includes Turner and Townsend as project managers, with Altus serving as cost manager.
Located in Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Australia, the Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a major public hospital providing a range of medical services to the Mid North Coast region.
The hospital has 224 beds and offers specialized care in areas such as emergency medicine, surgery, and obstetrics.
It also features state-of-the-art facilities, including a cancer center and a renal unit.
With over 1,500 staff members, the Port Macquarie Base Hospital delivers quality patient care and is committed to improving healthcare outcomes for the community.
The hospital upgrade will focus on expanding the emergency and maternity departments. These critical areas will be expanded to cater to the growing needs of the local community. Essential improvements will also be made to mechanical systems within the existing hospital structure.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park expressed his enthusiasm for the project’s progress, stating that it will result in significant benefits for the Mid North Coast region. The upgrade is expected to create nearly 500 direct jobs and potentially thousands of indirect jobs during its duration. Local community members and staff will have opportunities to participate in the planning process and contribute to shaping the hospital’s future.

While the full scope and construction timelines for the upgrade project are yet to be determined, it is expected that the planning and design phase will be completed once a builder has been selected. The NSW Government’s commitment to upgrading Port Macquarie Base Hospital demonstrates its dedication to providing high-quality healthcare services to the local community.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park emphasized the importance of this project, stating: ‘This investment will result in the largest upgrade since Port Macquarie Base Hospital was built and will help ensure the hospital continues to support the needs of the Mid North Coast community for decades to come.’
Local Labor spokesperson Cameron Murphy added: ‘There will be many opportunities for the community and staff to be involved throughout the planning of the redevelopment to help shape the upgrade of their local hospital.‘
The Port Macquarie Base Hospital upgrade project comes on the heels of a recent A$33.97m infrastructure enhancement, which included the construction of a rooftop helipad and additional car parking spaces. This project aimed to improve emergency healthcare access and alleviate parking congestion around the hospital.
