Spain’s wine exports saw a surge in value last year, but volume sales declined to their lowest level since 2013. Despite the drop in volumes, the country’s wine export revenue reached €2.98bn ($3.13bn) in 2024.
Value of Spain‘s Wine Exports Increases, But Volume Sales Decline
Spain‘s wine exports saw a rise in value last year, but the country experienced a decline in volume sales. According to new findings from the Observatorio Español del Mercado del Vino (OEMV), the value of Spain‘s wine exports increased by 1.4% to €2.98bn ($3.13bn) in 2024.
Spain is located in southwestern Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the east.
The country's geography is diverse, with mountains, forests, and coastlines along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.
The Pyrenees Mountains separate Spain from France, while the Sierra Nevada mountain range runs through the south of the country.
Spain's climate varies greatly depending on the region, ranging from a Mediterranean climate in the south to a temperate oceanic climate in the north.
Volume Sales Drop to Lowest Level Since 2013
However, the growth in export revenue came as volume sales fell by 5% to around 1.9 billion litres. This marks a significant decline and is the lowest level of volume sales since 2013, when exports sat at 1.8 billion litres.

Regional Variations in Export Performance
The Spanish Rioja region’s control board revealed that shipments of the wine had grown more than 4% in 2024, driven by exports to the UK and US. In particular, exports to the UK grew by 12% in volume terms to just under 32.4m litres, while in the US, volume sales increased by 17% to 10.4m litres.
Germany Sees Decline in Rioja Exports
However, exported volumes of Rioja to Germany dropped 5% to 11.7m litres, marking a decline for the third-largest market for the wine variety.
The OEMV described the figures as ‘the second best year‘ for Spain in terms of the value of its wine exports, with the best year being 2022 when exports hit just over €3bn.
