A British tourist’s swift action saved five lives in a deadly knife attack near Dam Square in Amsterdam, as the suspect was tackled to the ground by the heroic citizen.
A British tourist has been hailed as a hero for tackling a suspected knifeman to the ground in central Amsterdam, saving the lives of five people who were stabbed near Dam Square on Thursday.
On August 31, 2008, a violent knife attack occurred in the heart of Amsterdam's city center.
The attacker, a 24-year-old man, stabbed and killed one person, injuring two others before being apprehended by police.
The motive behind the attack was reportedly a dispute over a parking space.
The incident raised concerns about public safety and security measures in tourist areas.
Investigations revealed that the perpetrator had no prior history of violent behavior, adding to the shock and mystification surrounding the event.
The incident unfolded when the suspect, identified as a 30-year-old man from ‘Ukraine‘, began attacking passersby. The victim, who wishes to remain anonymous, quickly sprang into action, restraining the suspect until police arrived.
A Split-Second Decision
Amsterdam’s Mayor Femke Halsema praised the British tourist for his ‘exceptional’ instinct in responding to the attack. She said that he showed ‘very modest‘ bravery and made a decision in a split second, which is truly exceptional.

The mayor personally thanked the British man at her official residence, where he was given an award for bravery. Halsema explained that the man had no desire to become famous and that his main concern had been for the victims of the attack.
A Heroic Citizen’s Arrest
Police described the victim’s actions as ‘heroic‘ and ‘brave.’ They noted that it is a split-second decision whether people will go into action or not, and that taking responsibility in such circumstances requires great courage.
The suspect was arrested and taken to hospital with a leg injury. The victims were treated for their injuries and are expected to make a full recovery.
Investigation Underway
Police say the motive behind the attack is under investigation, but they are considering the possibility that the suspect may have chosen his victims at random.
