UK Defence Secretary John Healey calls for global support for Ukraine efforts, as a coalition of nations meets to discuss strengthening the country’s position in talks with Russia.
The UK’s Defence Secretary, ‘John Healey’ , has welcomed over 200 military planners from 30 countries to Brussels for a meeting on support for Ukraine. The gathering is part of the ‘coalition of the willing‘ aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position in talks with Russia.
Healey stated that the UK is stepping up its support for Ukraine, describing it as a ‘serious and committed effort’ . This includes the deployment of reassurance forces to safeguard peace in case of a negotiated peace deal. The goal is to secure safe skies, seas, and land, while supporting Ukrainian armed forces to become their strongest possible deterrent.
Dutch Defence Minister Ruben Brekelmans emphasized the importance of clarity on coalition plans. He noted that many countries need to go through domestic approval procedures for any deployment, making it essential to have a clear picture of what such a mission would entail. The United States’ backing is also crucial, but the exact role needed depends on the format of the mission.

EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas highlighted the need for more clarity on the reassurance force’s role in deterring, monitoring, or keeping peace on the ground. She noted that Ukraine wants peace, but Russia has yet to make an equivalent commitment.
Defence ministers from over 30 countries will receive military briefings on the current situation on the frontline. They will also discuss what types of forces and capabilities would be most helpful as reassurance forces.
