In a world where e-commerce has become an integral part of our daily lives, the traditional delivery model is facing a major overhaul. Enter ‘drone delivery,’ a game-changing technology that promises to revolutionize the way we receive our online purchases. At the forefront of this innovation is Dublin-based startup Manna Aero, which is on a mission to disrupt the retail industry with its autonomous drone delivery system.
Drone delivery is a rapidly growing industry that promises to transform the way goods are transported.
With the ability to reach remote areas and bypass congested roads, drones can significantly reduce delivery times and costs.
Companies like Amazon and UPS are already investing heavily in drone technology, with some even testing drone deliveries in urban areas.
According to a report by MarketsandMarkets, the global drone market is expected to reach $43.9 billion by 2026.
As regulations continue to evolve, we can expect to see more widespread adoption of drone delivery services.
A New Era in Delivery
Manna Aero’s founder and CEO, Bobby Healy, is a self-proclaimed ‘tech guy’ who left school at 17 to pursue his passion for video games. After selling six businesses, including CarTrawler, a vehicle rental service for airline websites, Healy founded Manna Aero in 2018 with the goal of creating measurable impact planet-wide. The company’s drones have already flown over 200,000 delivery flights in Dublin and Helsinki, Finland, making it one of the most experienced drone delivery startups in the world.
How it Works
Manna Aero’s drones are designed to carry cargo weighing up to 4kg, equivalent to four 15-inch pizzas or several books. Each aircraft has eight motors, although they can easily fly on four if disaster strikes. The drones operate from bases squeezed into small land areas and use a complex system of landing zones and navigation to deliver packages with precision.
Drone technology has undergone significant advancements in recent years, driven by innovations in design, materials, and software.
Drones are now equipped with high-resolution cameras, GPS navigation, and obstacle avoidance systems, enabling them to capture stunning aerial footage and perform complex tasks.
According to a report by Grand View Research, the global drone market is projected to reach $43.9 billion by 2028, up from $3.4 billion in 2018.
As drones become increasingly sophisticated, they are being used in various industries, including filmmaking, agriculture, and search and rescue operations.

The autonomous nature of the drones means that each aircraft can complete up to 80 deliveries per day, reducing energy consumption and increasing efficiency. With a ‘pilot’ overseeing up to 20 aircraft at once, Manna Aero’s drones are capable of handling large volumes of deliveries in a short amount of time.
Expansion Plans
Manna Aero’s catchment area currently covers 150,000 people in Blanchardstown, but the company plans to expand its coverage to over 1 million people across Dublin by the end of the year. This would make Manna Aero’s drone delivery system accessible to most of the city outside the centre, where shorter distances and fewer private gardens for drops rule out traditional delivery methods.
Challenges Ahead
While Manna Aero has made significant progress in its drone delivery technology, the company still faces several challenges ahead. Regulatory hurdles, including the adoption of EU drone standards, have slowed down its UK launch plans. Additionally, some people may be hesitant to adopt instant retail gratification, and the company will need to address these concerns as it expands its services.
A New Era for Retail
Healy is optimistic about the future of drone deliveries, believing that it will enable a totally different form of commerce than what we have today. With Manna Aero’s technology, small businesses can now compete with giants like ‘Amazon,’ offering faster and more efficient delivery options to customers. As the company continues to innovate and overcome challenges, one thing is clear: the rise of drone delivery is here to stay, and Manna Aero is leading the charge.
