International affairs editor Rageh Omaar has made his first foreign dispatch for ITV’s News at Ten since being taken to hospital last year due to illness. The 57-year-old featured in a prerecorded package on west Africa on Friday evening, marking a significant step in his gradual return to work.

Omaar was taken to hospital after appearing shaky and struggling to read news during a live broadcast of the News at Ten last April. He was given ‘medical treatment‘ for an undisclosed condition, which caused concern among viewers who took to social media to express their support. A rerun of the news programme was pulled from ITV’s +1 channel in response.
Since then, Omaar has been gradually returning to work, appearing on online platforms such as ITVX. A video released on ITV News‘s YouTube account on Friday showed Rageh Omaar interviewing ‘Ivorian businessman Tidjane Thiam’ , the leader of PDCI-RDA, the main opposition party in Ivory Coast.
Omaar joined ITV in 2013 as a special correspondent and presenter for ITV News. Prior to that, he began his career as a print journalist in 1990 at the Voice newspaper in London before moving to Ethiopia as a freelance foreign correspondent. He gained international recognition during the 2003 invasion of Iraq while reporting for the BBC from a hotel rooftop in Baghdad, winning a best TV news journalist prize at the Ethnic Multicultural Media Academy that year.
Omaar’s return to work marks an important milestone in his recovery. As a seasoned international affairs editor and presenter, he covers major news stories across the world and presents ITV’s current affairs programme On Assignment. His experience and expertise will be invaluable in providing viewers with in-depth coverage of global events.
