Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Thursday, marking the conclusion of a three-nation Southeast Asian tour. The visit is aimed at strengthening ties with Cambodia and promoting regional cooperation.
During his two-day stay, Xi Jinping will meet with King Norodom Sihamoni, Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Senate President Hun Sen. Trade will be a major focus of their discussions, as Cambodia faces high tariff rates imposed by the US.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Xi Jinping‘s visit comes as China seeks to strengthen its influence in Southeast Asia. The country has been increasing its economic presence in the region over the past decade, using its substantial economic leverage to promote cooperation.
The Khmer Rouge was a communist organization that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979.
Led by Pol Pot, the group implemented radical policies, including forced labor, mass executions, and the removal of urban populations.
An estimated 1.7 to 2.2 million people, out of a population of approximately 8 million, died due to execution, starvation, or disease during their rule.
The regime's brutal policies led to its eventual collapse in 1979, when Vietnamese forces intervened.
Cambodia and China have a long history of cooperation, with Beijing providing significant financial support for the country’s development. In 2024, Cambodia surpassed $15 billion in trade with China, representing nearly 30% of the country’s total trade volume.
