A new initiative from billionaire investor Warren Buffett is significantly boosting fundraising efforts for an Omaha-based homeless shelter, the Stephen Center.
Warren Buffett is a renowned American businessman, investor, and philanthropist.
Born on August 30, 1930, in Omaha, Nebraska, he developed an interest in business and investing at a young age.
Buffett began his career as a stockbroker and later founded Berkshire Hathaway, one of the world's largest conglomerates.
He is known for his value investing philosophy and has been named one of the most successful investors in history, with a net worth exceeding $100 billion.
The Power of Philanthropy in the Community
On February 22, Buffett highlighted the Stephen Center in his annual letter to Berkshire Hathaway shareholders. This move sparked a dramatic increase in phone calls, website visitors, and social media traffic, with the nonprofit receiving an unprecedented surge in support. ‘such opportunities from prominent individuals like Buffett do not often arise’ , noted Chris Knauf, CEO of the Stephen Center.
A Rare Opportunity for the Nonprofit
Buffett’s generosity will benefit the Stephen Center through a book auction featuring ’60 Years of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)’. The book, which includes previously unseen photos, quotes, and stories about late Berkshire vice chairman ‘Charlie Munger’ , is available for purchase at Berkshire’s annual shareholder meeting on May 2 and May 3. Among these copies, 18 signed by Buffett and Carrie Sova will be offered exclusively to shareholders who contribute $5,000 or more to the Stephen Center.
Berkshire Hathaway, also known as BRK.A, is a multinational conglomerate holding company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska.
Founded in 1839 as a textile mill, the company has undergone significant transformations over the years.
In 1955, Warren Buffett acquired a controlling stake in Berkshire Hathaway, marking the beginning of its modern era.
Today, the company operates through various subsidiaries, including GEICO, BNSF Railway, and Coca-Cola.
Berkshire Hathaway's market value exceeds $500 billion, making it one of the largest publicly traded companies globally.
Charles Thomas Munger is an American businessman, investor, and philanthropist.
Born on January 1, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, Munger graduated from Harvard University and later served in the US Army Air Forces during World War II.
He co-founded Berkshire Hathaway with Warren Buffett in 1970 and has served as its vice chairman since 1978.
Known for his value investing approach, Munger is also a renowned public speaker, delivering lectures on 'Psychology vs. Finance' and sharing insights into cognitive biases.

A Match Made in Heaven
Every donation made to the nonprofit will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Buffett, ensuring that the funds raised go directly towards supporting the shelter’s programs. The Stephen Center provides a range of services, including an emergency shelter, addiction recovery center, and affordable housing units. Its focus is on equipping individuals with the resources necessary to achieve positive housing destinations and better lives.
A Significant Boost for the Nonprofit
The initiative has already granted the nonprofit a substantial amount of cash. An online auction held earlier this month offered the first eight signed copies of ’60 Years of Berkshire Hathaway’ , with each copy selling for far more than $5,000. The total amount raised, matched by Buffett, exceeded $620,000 for the shelter.
A Transformative Gift
The remaining ten books will be auctioned off at the upcoming shareholder meeting. The titles will be available in-person at the Stephen Center’s booth in the CHI Health Center. ‘the proceeds from this initiative will help build a new shelter focused on expanding services for women and children’ , said Buffett’s gift to the Stephen Center is expected to have a profound impact on the nonprofit and its more than 1,000 annual clients.
A Legacy of Giving
Buffett often singles out local nonprofits to benefit from his donations. He has previously gifted seven-figure sums to Nebraska charities like ‘Girls Inc. of Omaha’ . The CEO of the Stephen Center described Buffett as ”not a more beloved figure throughout Omaha than Mr. Buffett” and acknowledged that Buffett’s love for the city is reciprocated.
