Prahran MP Sam Hibbins has resigned from parliament after leaving the Victorian Greens Party due to an affair with a staffer. His office in Parliament House was also vandalized, leading him to report the matter to police. A by-election will be held in the seat of Prahran.
Unauthorised Access and Vandalism
Hibbins reported an unauthorised access to his office in Parliament House on November 11, 2024.
He stated that personal items, including family photos, were vandalized with offensive and threatening graffiti.
The matter has been reported to police.
Reason for Resignation
Hibbins’ resignation comes after he left the Victorian Greens party room due to an affair with a staffer that breached party rules.
He had previously been co-deputy leader of the Victorian Greens but stepped down on November 1, 2024.
Impact on Prahran Seat
The departure of Hibbins means there will be a by-election in the seat of Prahran, which has been held by the Victorian Greens for 12 years.
The Greens, Labor, and Liberals have all held the seat at various times in the past two decades.
Response from Victorian Greens Leader
Victorian Greens leader Ellen Sandell supported Hibbins’ decision to resign from parliament,
stating that his actions did not meet the standard of behavior expected from MPs.
She also condemned his behavior, saying it was why they took strong action to remove him from their party room.
