Chinese President Xi Jinping begins his final leg of a three-nation Southeast Asian tour in Cambodia, aiming to strengthen ties and promote regional cooperation.
Xi Jinping Arrives in Cambodia for Two-Day State Visit
Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Thursday, marking the conclusion of a three-nation Southeast Asian tour. The visit is aimed at strengthening ties with Cambodia and promoting regional cooperation.
During his two-day stay, Xi Jinping will meet with King Norodom Sihamoni, Prime Minister Hun Manet, and Senate President Hun Sen. Trade will be a major focus of their discussions, as Cambodia faces high tariff rates imposed by the US.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
Xi Jinping‘s visit comes as China seeks to strengthen its influence in Southeast Asia. The country has been increasing its economic presence in the region over the past decade, using its substantial economic leverage to promote cooperation.
The Khmer Rouge was a communist organization that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979.
Led by Pol Pot, the group implemented radical policies, including forced labor, mass executions, and the removal of urban populations.
An estimated 1.7 to 2.2 million people, out of a population of approximately 8 million, died due to execution, starvation, or disease during their rule.
The regime's brutal policies led to its eventual collapse in 1979, when Vietnamese forces intervened.

Cambodia and China have a long history of cooperation, with Beijing providing significant financial support for the country’s development. In 2024, Cambodia surpassed $15 billion in trade with China, representing nearly 30% of the country’s total trade volume.
Located in Southeast Asia, Cambodia is a country with a rich history dating back to the ancient Khmer Empire.
The capital city, Phnom Penh, is home to the iconic 'Royal Palace' and the 'National Museum'.
Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest temple complexes in the world.
With a diverse culture influenced by Buddhism, Hinduism, and French colonialism, Cambodia offers a unique blend of traditions and cuisine.
The country's economy is driven primarily by agriculture, with rice being its main crop.
Regional Cooperation
Xi Jinping emphasized the need for regional cooperation and opposition to unilateralism and protectionism during his remarks at Phnom Penh International Airport. He also underscored the importance of upholding the multilateral trading system.
The visit is taking place on the 50th anniversary of the April 17, 1975 takeover of Cambodia by the communist Khmer Rouge. Beijing‘s role in supporting the Khmer Rouge regime has been a sensitive topic for both countries.
Despite concerns about China‘s increasing influence in the region, Cambodia remains one of its largest trading partners. The country has repeatedly denied any agreement granting China special privileges or the establishment of a foreign military base at the Ream Naval Base on its southern coast.
