California’s political landscape is set to change as Steve Hilton launches his bid for governor, promising a new era of positive populism and practical solutions. Will his ‘Golden Again’ message resonate with the Golden State?
Steve Hilton Announces Republican Bid for California Governor
Ex-advertising executive and former David Cameron adviser Steve Hilton has launched his campaign for California governor, running as a Republican. His campaign theme is ‘Golden Again: Great Jobs, Great Homes, Great Kids,’ focusing on positive populism to help working families.
Steve Hilton is a British journalist and television presenter.
He was born in 1969 in England, UK.
Hilton gained recognition as the former director of strategy for British Prime Minister David Cameron from 2010 to 2012.
He has also worked as a consultant and advisor to various organizations.
In addition, Hilton has presented several documentaries and series on politics and current affairs.
Hilton, who hosted a show on Fox News for six years, was one of the UK prime minister’s closest advisers before their falling out over ‘immigration and Brexit in 2016.’ He is thought to have been largely responsible for several early Cameron measures, including photo opportunities such as a husky expedition to Alaska.

At his campaign launch in Los Angeles, Hilton took aim at state Democrats, criticizing notoriously high state taxes, soaring home prices, and the ‘destruction of the California dream.’ He also welcomed the possibility of running against former vice-president Kamala Harris, who has not ruled out a run for governor. Harris would become the first Black woman elected governor in the US if she were to run and win.
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician and attorney.
Born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, she graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
Harris served as the Attorney General of California from 2011 to 2017 and later became a United States Senator for California in 2017.
She is known for her advocacy on issues like healthcare, immigration reform, and racial justice.
Hilton’s campaign promises focus on positive, practical solutions rather than ideology and dogma. He believes that the governor’s job is not a ‘consolation prize’ but rather an opportunity to make a real difference. However, this approach may face significant challenges given California’s top-two primary system, where all candidates compete on one ballot, regardless of party.
The last Republican to be elected governor in California was Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006. Republicans have not won a statewide race in heavily Democratic California in nearly two decades.
