Football Australia (FA) is currently searching for a new coach to lead the Matildas, the country’s national women’s soccer team. The search has been ongoing, with interim coach Tom Sermanni leading the team in two stints between 1994-1997 and 2005-2012.
The FA chief executive, James Johnson, expressed uncertainty on whether a new coach will be appointed before the SheBelieves Cup in February. Johnson stated that while they would like to make an appointment prior to the tournament, they want to ensure they have the right coach in place for the Women’s Asian Cup in 2026 and the preparation leading up to it.
The Matildas are set to kick off their SheBelives Cup campaign against Japan in Houston, Texas on February 20. The team closed out the year with an emphatic 6-0 thrashing of Chinese Taipei and are looking forward to their upcoming matches.
Football Australia (FA) is taking its time to find the right coach for the Matildas, with chief executive James Johnson stating that they will not rush the process.
The current interim coach, Tom Sermanni, has been leading the team since 1994-1997 and 2005-2012. However, he expressed uncertainty about whether he would remain in charge next year, saying he is happy to offer his services for as long as he is required.
In their final match of the year, the Matildas kept a clean sheet on their way to a thumping 6-0 victory over Chinese Taipei at Geelong’s Kardinia Park. FA chief executive James Johnson stated that they will take extra time if necessary to ensure they have the right coach in place for the Women’s Asian Cup in 2026 and the preparation that goes before it, as well as the right coach to take them to the Women’s World Cup in 2027.
Johnson was equally reserved when asked if FA had a target. “We had a long list. We had a shortlist. We have a very short, short, short, shortlist,” he said. “The reality is, we know who we want. We know the type of coach we want. We’ve just got to go out and get that coach when that coach is available.”
