A new skyscraper, 1 Undershaft, is set to dominate the UK’s skyline as planning permission is granted, with its unique blend of education and entertainment expected to draw in visitors.
New Skyscraper to Share Title of UK’s Tallest Building as Planning Permission is Granted
The height of the Shard will no longer be the maximum allowed due to civil aviation rules, as a new skyscraper in the City of London has been given planning permission. The building, 1 Undershaft, will stand at an impressive 309.6m tall, matching the height of the Shard to the centimetre.
Aiming for a Unique Feature
Designers Eric Parry Architects are pushing the boundaries with their new project by aiming to create Europe’s highest publicly-accessible viewing gallery. This feature is expected to draw in visitors and provide an unparalleled experience. The building will also boast a free-to-access public garden on the 11th floor, as well as an educational space, curated by the London Museum.
A Blend of Education and Entertainment
The uppermost floors of the building will be transformed into a “classroom in the sky”, offering visitors the chance to learn about London. At street level, a 12.5 by 7 metre public screen and temporary stage will be used to show productions, concerts, talks, and sporting fixtures to the public. This unique blend of education and entertainment is expected to make 1 Undershaft a must-visit destination in the City of London.
A Boost for Office Space
The completion of 1 Undershaft will provide almost 13% of the office space required in the City of London by 2040, highlighting the confidence that global investors have in the London real estate market and the UK economy more widely. Stanhope, a developer with experience on high-profile projects such as Tate Modern, has been appointed as development manager for 1 Undershaft on behalf of Aroland Holdings.
Behind the Scenes
Aroland Holdings is a British Virgin Islands registered company whose beneficial owner is listed as Kuok Khoon Hong, the co-founder of Singapore‘s Wilmar International, one of the world’s largest oil palm plantation owners. With planning permission in hand, 1 Undershaft is set to become a significant addition to London’s skyline, offering something for everyone from education to entertainment.
