Chugoku & Shikoku: From Tokyo…to beyond the Golden Route

The Chugoku region in western Japan is a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural beauty, stretching from Tokyo to Hiroshima along the Golden Route. This 500-mile (800 km) stretch connects many popular destinations, including Hakone, Kyoto, and Osaka.

To the north of Hiroshima lies Shimane Prefecture, home to the UNESCO-designated Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, where close to one-third of the world’s silver was mined during the 16th century. Travelers can explore old mine shafts and learn about the region’s mining heritage.

Northeast along the coast lies Tottori Prefecture, offering a unique experience with natural sand dunes stretching along 10 miles (16 km) of shoreline. Visitors can paraglide or sandboard, or check out art at The Sand Museum Tottori Sand Dunes.
