Ibiza’s dance music scene has lost a true icon with the passing of DJ Alfredo, whose legacy will continue to inspire generations of DJs and music lovers.
The Legacy of DJ Alfredo: A Pioneer of Ibiza‘s Dance Music Scene
DJ Alfredo, a true icon of Ibiza’s dance music scene, has passed away at the age of 71. With his anything-goes spirit and eclectic taste in music, he had a profound influence on British club culture.
A Pioneering DJ with a Global Reach
Born Alfredo Fiorito in Argentina in 1953, Alfredo emigrated to Paris, Madrid, and eventually Ibiza, where he lived a casual existence selling candles and clothes while honing his DJ skills at a local bar. His residency at Amnesia, which began in the late 1980s, was characterized by a complete lack of snobbery and an open-minded approach to music, blending genres from soft rock to reggae, disco, funk, electro, and early house.
Inspiring a Generation of DJs
A group of young British DJs – Danny Rampling, Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway, and Johnny Walker – had a transformative experience witnessing Alfredo perform at Amnesia in the late 1980s. Inspired by his unique style and artistic approach to DJing, they went on to create their own club nights, including Shoom in London, which pushed the sound of house music and ushered in a new era of British clubbing.
A Lasting Impact on Ibiza‘s Dance Music Scene
Alfredo’s influence on Ibiza’s dance music scene cannot be overstated. His non-hierarchical approach to DJing created a sense of community and inclusivity, where people from all walks of life could come together to enjoy good music and good company. As he himself explained, “The people and the music made it. You’d get a young guy talking to an old person – and listening to each other.”
A Global Icon Remembered
Alfredo’s legacy extends far beyond Ibiza’s shores. He played internationally throughout his career, including in east Asia throughout the 1990s, and continued to DJ regularly thereafter. His impact on the world of music has been recognized by artists such as Sister Bliss of Faithless, who said, “Safe to say he changed the world of music for the better.”
A Tribute from the Music Community
As news of Alfredo’s passing spread, tributes poured in from across the music community. Defected Records said, “Rest in peace to one of the greatest to ever do it. Ibiza would not be the same without him.” Vocalist Rowetta added, “He was a legend when I first played [Ibiza nightclub] KU in 1990 & he always will be.”
Alfredo’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of DJs and music lovers for years to come.
