Meet Barivel, the Guinness World Record holder for the largest Maine Coon cat, measuring an impressive 47.2 inches in length. Despite his massive size, Barivel’s calm and shy personality makes him a beloved companion to his owners.
The World Record for Largest Maine Coon Cat
Maine coons are renowned for their impressive size and gentle nature, making them a beloved breed among feline enthusiasts. These longhaired cats can weigh between 10 and 25 pounds (4.5 to 11.3 kilograms) and reach a height of approximately 10 to 16 inches (25 to 41 centimeters).
Meet the World’s Largest Maine Coon: Barivel
The current Guinness World Record holder for the largest Maine Coon cat is Barivel, an Italian feline who measures 47.2 inches (1.2 meters) in length. Born in September 2016, Barivel took the title in 2018 and holds a spot just 1 inch shorter than Stewie, another record-breaking Maine Coon.
Despite his massive size, Barivel’s personality is surprisingly calm and shy, according to his owners Edgar Scandurra and Cinzia Tinnirello. When not lounging around, Barivel enjoys a diet of biscuits, fish, and chicken.
Longest Domestic Cat: Ludo
Prior to Barivel’s reign, Ludo from the UK held the record for longest domestic cat, measuring 46.6 inches (118.33 centimeters) in length. Owned by Kelsey Gill, Ludo was a gentle giant who loved being cuddled and groomed. Although he lost his title to Barivel, Ludo remains a beloved feline companion.
Cygnus, an American Maine Coon, holds the record for the longest tail of any domestic cat, measuring 17.58 inches (44.65 centimeters) in length. His tail was longer than his body, earning him a spot in the Guinness World Records. Although he passed away in 2017, Cygnus still holds the posthumous record.
Altair: The Living Longest Tail
After Cygnus’ untimely passing, his half-brother Altair inherited the world record for the largest tail on a living domesticated cat, measuring an impressive 16 inches (40.6 centimeters) in length. The Powers family, who previously owned Cygnus, welcomed Altair into their family and are now proud owners of not one but two record-breaking Maine Coon cats.
Other Record-Breaking Felines
The Powers family also owns Fenrir, the world’s tallest domestic cat, which stands at an impressive height. However, unlike Barivel, who is a Maine Coon, Fenrir is an F2 Savannah cat, another large and majestic breed.
