Cowboys Coaching Search Continues
The Dallas Cowboys will continue their search for a new head coach, with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer set to meet with the team again on Wednesday. This comes after his initial interview on Tuesday, which lasted four hours.
Schottenheimer has been the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator since 2023 and is considered a top candidate for the job. He would be the first NFL head coaching gig for the 51-year-old Schottenheimer, who is the son of late Marty Schottenheimer. Brian Schottenheimer’s experience as quarterbacks coach for the Washington Redskins and San Diego Chargers from 2001-2005 and as offensive coordinator for several teams before landing in Dallas in 2022 makes him a strong contender.
Schottenheimer’s Path to Head Coach
Schottenheimer has reportedly expressed his desire to have the responsibility of calling plays, which he did not do while working under Mike McCarthy. This could be a deciding factor in his favor if he is offered the job. The Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones, tends to prioritize coaches with whom he has a familiar relationship, and Schottenheimer fits this criteria.
Jaguars GM Trent Baalke Out
Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars have fired their general manager, Trent Baalke, after hours of Coen backing out of a scheduled in-person interview. The team’s owner, Shad Khan, stated that both he and Baalke agreed to “respectfully separate” but a person familiar with the decision said Baalke was actually fired.
Coaching Search Continues
The Jaguars will continue their search for a new head coach, with candidates including Liam Coen, Patrick Graham, and Robert Saleh. The team’s young quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, has upside, and they have a relatively new practice facility and $1.4 billion stadium renovation upcoming. They also have the fifth overall draft pick in April and roughly $50 million in salary cap space for 2025.
Cowboys’ Internal Candidate
The Cowboys are expected to continue their talks with Schottenheimer on Wednesday. The team is looking for a new head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy, and Schottenheimer’s experience and familiarity with the organization make him a strong candidate.
