Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei believes that advances in artificial intelligence (A.I.) could soon enable humans to live twice as long. This vision is not far-fetched, according to Amodei, who thinks that a doubling of the human lifespan is “not at all crazy” considering what can be accomplished in areas like biology over the next century.
Amodei’s optimism stems from his confidence in A.I.’s potential to accelerate progress in various fields. He notes that if A.I. is developed correctly, it could enable 100 years of progress in areas like biology in just five to ten years. This means that humans could potentially live longer and healthier lives, with a doubling of the human lifespan becoming a reality as soon as 2030.
Amodei’s confidence in A.I.’s capabilities has been solidified by recent advancements in models that can perform tasks similar to those of Ph.D. students in areas like math, programming, and biology. He believes that by 2026 or 2027, A.I. systems will be broadly better than humans at almost all things.
While Amodei is optimistic about the potential of A.I. to drive progress in various areas, including health, military applications, and the workplace, he also acknowledges that there are limitations to rapid progress. For example, advancements in autonomous driving will be restrained by deployment cycles and laws, while A.I.’s pharmaceutical contributions will still need to undergo clinical trials.

In an essay published last October, he highlighted the potential of A.I. advances to lead to progress in treating nearly all natural infectious diseases, eliminating most cancers, and creating effective cures for genetic diseases.
With Anthropic emerging as one of OpenAI‘s strongest competitors, Amodei’s vision for a future driven by A.I. is becoming increasingly relevant. The company has recently received $1 billion in funding from Google, which previously invested $2 billion in the startup.
