Trump’s Tariff Threats
On Sunday, Trump described the US-EU trade deficit as an ‘atrocity,’ claiming it was around $350 billion. However, independent media have refuted this figure, citing EU data that puts the trade balance at about $53 billion in favor of the European Union.
EU Leaders Respond to Trump’s Threats
European leaders have shown a unified and self-assured response to Trump‘s tariff threats. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that a change in customs policy would be ‘bad for the US and bad for Europe,’ while Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden offered a similar take, saying that if someone wants a trade war, they can have it.
Cooperation or Competition?
The EU needs the US as an ally in providing support to Ukraine and as a market for its sales. However, Arthur Leichthammer, a policy fellow at the Jacques Delors Centre, notes that the EU’s dependence on US military protection could make it hard for the bloc to stand up to the US.
The United States has provided significant economic, military, and humanitarian aid to 'Ukraine' since 2014.
In response to 'Russia's annexation of Crimea', the US imposed sanctions on Russian officials and entities.
The US also increased military aid to 'Ukraine' in 2020, providing over $200 million in assistance.
Additionally, the US has provided over $1 billion in humanitarian aid to 'Ukraine' since 2014, supporting refugees and those affected by conflict.
In 2022, the US pledged an additional $40 billion in support for 'Ukraine'.
The EU’s Defense Strategy
The European Union is currently looking for ways to make its defense strategy less dependent on the US. Strengthening the defense industry and jointly purchasing weapons systems could play a key role in this. Most EU officials agree that more needs to be invested in defense, with the European Commission estimating that €500 billion worth of defense spending will be required over the next 10 years.
Appeasing Trump
Leichthammer suggests that the EU could appeal to Washington by purchasing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the US, deepening trans-Atlantic cooperation in relation to China, or buying US weapons systems. However, ambitions for increased defense spending in favor of the United States might still fail due to opposition from France.
